ISO 9001 Quality CertificationWhat the process looks like from start to certificate

ISO 9001 certification is formal, independent confirmation that your Quality Management System meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. This page explains what certification involves, how the audit process works, and what the three-year certification cycle looks like.

What It Means

What Is ISO 9001 Certification?

Certification is not a self-declaration. It is the outcome of an independent audit conducted by an accredited certification body, confirming that an organisation's QMS conforms to ISO 9001:2015 and is effectively implemented.

In Australia, certification bodies must be accredited by JAS-ANZ, the government-appointed accreditation body, to issue certificates that are recognised by regulators, government agencies, and international trading partners.

Independent verification.
An accredited auditor assesses your QMS against all normative requirements of ISO 9001:2015. The finding is objective, based on evidence, not opinion.
Scope-specific.
Your certificate covers a defined scope: the products, services, and locations your QMS applies to. The scope is agreed before the audit begins and stated on the certificate.
Valid for three years.
A certificate is issued for a three-year cycle. Annual surveillance audits in years one and two verify continued conformance, with full recertification at the end of year three.
Globally recognised.
JAS-ANZ is a signatory to the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement. Certificates issued by JAS-ANZ accredited bodies are accepted in over 100 countries.

The Certification Cycle

How the Three-Year Certification Cycle Works

ISO 9001 certification is not a one-time event. It is maintained through a structured cycle of audits that verify ongoing conformance and continual improvement.

Stage 1 audit

A documentation review conducted before the on-site audit. The auditor assesses your QMS documentation, confirms your scope, and identifies any areas that need attention before Stage 2.

Stage 2 audit

The on-site certification audit. The auditor verifies that your QMS is effectively implemented across all functions within the scope, gathering evidence through interviews, observation, and document review.

Certificate issued

Following successful completion of Stage 2 and closure of any nonconformities, the certification body makes a certification decision and issues your accredited ISO 9001 certificate.

Year 1 surveillance

A shorter audit conducted approximately 12 months after initial certification. Surveillance audits focus on selected clauses, corrective actions from the previous audit, and evidence of continual improvement.

Year 2 surveillance

A second surveillance audit at the 24-month mark. Together, the two surveillance audits must cover all QMS processes over the three-year cycle.

Recertification audit

At the end of the three-year cycle, a full recertification audit is conducted. This is similar in scope to the original Stage 2 audit and, if successful, renews the certificate for another three years.

The Audit

What Happens During a Certification Audit

A Stage 2 certification audit is a structured, evidence-based assessment of your QMS. Auditors are not looking for perfection, they are looking for a system that is genuinely implemented, understood by the people using it, and capable of identifying and correcting its own problems.

Certification audit process
Opening meeting.
The audit begins with an opening meeting to confirm scope, introduce the audit team, and outline the day's schedule. Senior management attendance is expected.
Document and record review.
Auditors review QMS documentation, records, and objective evidence across all clauses within scope. They are looking for implemented processes, not just written procedures.
Process observation and interviews.
Auditors observe processes in operation and interview personnel at all levels to assess awareness, competence, and consistency between documented processes and actual practice.
Closing meeting and findings.
The audit concludes with a closing meeting. The auditor presents findings, classifies any nonconformities, and explains next steps. A written audit report follows.
